a short q&A

Updated: Oct 13, 2025

I thought I'd ease you in with a short Q&A so you can get a vibe for the story! Check out the ABOUT, MOONFLOWER, and CHARACTERS tab for more information on Moonflower. Content warnings are listed on the FAQ.

How did Moonflower come about?

Originally the daydream was just me—no Jacob, no Dawson City, no creatures—just a girl traveling home through a world cracked open by the apocalypse, searching for her family. From that premise, Diana was quickly born, but her and Jacob's dynamic has changed a lot. They were very hostile in the beginning concept, and I'm much more pleased with their hesitant cooperation in the finished product.

The apocalypse set in 2020. Is this an allegory for covid?

No, it's actually because 2020 is easy to count from (I'm so bad at math it isn't even funny).

What is the story inspired by?

What isn't it? Just about every piece of apocalypse or dystopian media I've ever consumed, but to narrow it down to the big three… A Quiet Place (movie), Don't Escape: 4 Days to Survive (video game), and Parallel City (Webtoon).

What character do you relate to the most?

   Situationally? Diana. Emotionally? Jacob.

I based Diana's family dynamic on my own—I grew up in a loving family, I have a sister, we're all very close as adults. Diana is mixed and I am mixed (different Asians but close enough lol) yet I feel like I've poured a lot more of myself into Jacob than into her.

Jacob is afraid of everything. Anxiety and self-worth are still subjects I struggle with, so I can feel myself in a lot of his reactions. Diana is far more confident in herself than me and she also has a more naturally positive outlook than Jacob does. I want to be like Diana, but I am like Jacob.

No one is truly a one-for-one stand-in but there are definitely pieces of me in both of them!
